The Steel Structures Technology Center focuses on providing services, technical resources and training related to the design, fabrication, erection and inspection of steel-framed structures. The firm provides consulting services in steel construction practices and quality. Founded in 1990, SSTC has provided training and support to thousands of engineers, fabricators, erectors, inspectors, building officials and others involved in steel buildings, steel bridges and other forms of steel construction.
SSTC seminars are conducted in cooperation with the International Code Council, and all SSTC inspection seminars are approved for ICC certification renewals. If you have questions about ICC Structural Steel and Welding Special Inspector (85) certification, transitioning to the Structural Steel and Bolting Special Inspector (S1) certification, and/or the Structural Welding Special Inspector (S2) certification, and renewal, please visit this page. It provides answers and provides links to forms and answers to your questions. If the page does not answer your questions, please email us at info@steelstructures.com .
Each one-day Inspection SSTC seminar provides 8.0 continuing education hours (0.8 CEUs, 8.0 PDHs), and the Plan Reading seminar provides 2.5 continuing education hours (0.25 CEUs, 2.5 PDHs). For AWS Certified Welding Inspectors, SSTC seminars count toward AWS CWI renewal under AWS QC1:2007. For professional engineers and structural engineers, SSTC seminars also count toward continuing education / professional development requirements.
To improve efficiency and quality in the steel construction industry, SSTC publishes the Structural Bolting Handbook, the Structural Welding Quality Handbook, and the Shop Inspection Handbook for Structural Steel Buildings. We also make available the Structural Steel inspector's Workbook, written by Bob Shaw of the SSTC and published by the International Code Council.
SSTC now offers a unique service to fabricators, erectors, testing and inspection agencies, building departments, and others who need to establish or document the knowledge of their inspectors. SSTC now offers to employers of inspectors a Welding Inspector Qualification Examination that meets the requirements of AWS B5.1:2003, Standard for the Qualification of Welding Inspectors, the same technical basis as AWS QC1 for certifying welding inspectors through examination by AWS. Soon, SSTC will release examinations on the additional requirements for seismic work inspection, structural welding inspection specialists, and for structural bolting.
SSTC frequently provides consulting services to owners, engineers, fabricators, erectors and testing agencies to assist in the understanding and/or resolution of steel construction issues. Examples of recent work includes implementation of the AISC and AWS requirements for seismic construction, bolting installation and quality issues, welding design and quality issues, and the development and review of WPSs (welding procedure specifications). SSTC provides these consulting services through Robert E. Shaw, Jr., PE. Mr. Shaw, with 36 years experience in the steel construction industry, is active in standards development, serving on American Institute of Steel Construction, American Welding Society, Research Council on Structural Connections, and ASTM International standards-writing committees. He is also involved in international welding activities, chairing Commission XV of the International institute of Welding.
